Dear Democracy: Spring 2025 Letter Writing Drive

Join us for our Dear Democracy Kickoff Event on Friday, April 4th from 12-3 pm in Wilder Main!

We want Oberlin to get involved in civic engagement in a productive and collaborative way. Student Senate and OC Votes are spearheading Dear Democracy: Spring 2025 Letter Writing Drive for the month of April!

Our goals:

  • Empower Oberlin students to write & send letters to their elected representatives
  • Create a cross-campus collaboration effort
  • Present students with ways to bolster their civic engagement

Our asks:

If you or your organization would like to help organize the logistics of the drive, please reach out to OC Votes. If you are able, host your own internal letter writing event within your organization as part of the Oberlin drive! This should occur during the month of April. We would ask that you drop completed letters off with us! If you are considering hosting an event, please let us know in this form.

The drive will occur through the month of April 2025. Each Friday, we will have open hours from 12-1 pm in Wilder Lobby for students to come and write letters and/or drop off letters they’ve already written. We will keep track of the number of letters that we write!

Uplifting student voices is necessary, and this letter-writing campaign will give students a way to express themselves to elected officials. We hope that you will join us in promoting Oberlin’s civic engagement.

The content of letters will not be monitored but we ask that students and community members consult resources on writing effective letters to their representatives. Letters should be no more than a page long and maintain a civil tone in order to be more effective. The speech demonstrated in these letters will be the speech of individual students and will not necessarily represent the views of the institution. Consult some resources below for additional guidance.

We look forward to working with you. For more resources, see below!
