Career Exploration and Development

Career Exploration and Development (CED) is your go-to place for figuring out your professional future! We're here to help you discover what excites you, build the skills you need, and find your direction. Whether you're still figuring things out or have a clear vision, our holistic coaching approach is designed to support you every step of the way.

Here's how we can help:

  • One-on-One Advising: Personalized advice to help you navigate your career journey.
     
  • Cohort Programs: Join groups with similar interests to learn and grow together.
     
  • Career Communities: Join a career community to connect with fellow students, alumni, parents, staff, and faculty who share your interests. These communities are great for exploring different career paths, understanding various industries, and developing career-readiness skills.

There are seven career communities, and each is led by a dedicated career advisor who will guide you through career exploration, goal setting, and decision-making. Plus, you'll get access to guest speakers, career panels, career treks, workshops, and more.

These events are fantastic opportunities to learn about industry trends and gain insights from experienced professionals.

Ready to kick off your college journey with some fun and connections? Stop by during Orientation to meet the team! At our events, you'll be able to get awesome Oberlin gear and get a professional headshot for your social media profile, including Handshake, OberLink, and LinkedIn!

Our events include:

  • Chill Out with Career Exploration and Development (Wednesday, September 4th from 11:00 am-12:30 pm in Mudd, A Level)
  • Photo Pop-In at Career Exploration and Development (Thursday, September 5th from 11:00 am-2:00 pm in Mudd, A Level)
  • Photo Pop-In at Career Exploration and Development (Friday, September 6th from 11:00 am-2:00 pm in Mudd, A Level)

‌Leveraging Technology for Career and Internship Opportunities

Career Exploration and Development (CED) partners with several technology platforms to help you network yourself professionally! They include:

  • Handshake provides a vast database of employment and internship opportunities. The platform allows you to upload application materials, track your progress, schedule an appointment with a career advisor, and register for a workshop or a career panel.
     
  • OberLink is our alumni & parent network and career resource hub. You can sign up to join a career community, connect with alumni & parents, and search for alumni-sourced internships and jobs.
     
  • Interstride connects international and domestic students to global and domestic career opportunities and highlights CPT -- and OPT-friendly employers and companies.

‌Signature Programs in Career Exploration and Development

Internship Programs

Ready to put your liberal arts skills into action in the real world? Internships are your ticket to gain hands-on experience and insight into potential career paths. We encourage all Obies to dive into at least two internships during their time at Oberlin (more is even better!). Internships are a game-changer as they can help you explore your career interests, gain new skills, build your resume, and network with professionals!

There are a few different types of internships offered through Oberlin:

  • Winter Term Micro-Internships are short, 3-4 week experiences during January that are curated just for Obies with help and support from alumni, parents, and friends of the college! Funding may be available for qualifying students.
     
  • Summer Internships are 8-12 week opportunities for a deeper dive into your field of interest. These are generously support by alumni and friends of the college, and up to $4,000 to $5,500 in funding is available for unpaid or low-paid internships.
     
  • Summer on the Cuyahoga is an intensive summer immersion program in Cleveland with a paid internship and free housing, which offers an excellent opportunity to explore Cleveland's professional and social offerings.
     
  • The Internship+ Program is designed for third-year students for high-quality summer internships and experiences. Up to $5,000 is available to students for unpaid or low-paid internships!

Ashby

‌Ashby Business Scholars

Are you interested in business, finance, or consulting? The Ashby Business Scholars program is your ticket to gaining a competitive edge in these fields! Open to students from all majors, this program equips you with essential skills, knowledge, and connections to help you land top internships and jobs in various business disciplines.

The Ashby Business Scholars program allows you to dive into a two-credit course in the fall, where you'll engage in interactive discussions and case studies focused on financial concepts and professional development. It also allows provides you with professional development and networking opportunities, by visiting cities like Cleveland, New York, Boston, and Chicago to meet with Oberlin alumni and friends of the college who are leaders in business and finance.

Senior Launch Program

We know you're just starting your college journey, but it's never too early to dream big about your future! The Senior Launch Program is a fantastic intiative to make sure you smoothly transition from college life to a successful career when the time comes.
