What is ObieAlert?
ObieAlert is an emergency notification system and easy-to-use safety app for members of the Oberlin College and Conservatory campus community—students and employees. ObieAlert places essential safety services at your fingertips.
How does ObieAlert work?
Part of Oberlin’s emergency preparedness plan, ObieAlert offers mass notification through voice messages, text messaging, email, and the internet. ObieAlert provides timely alerts when an unforeseen incident has occurred. Should an incident continue for any length of time, updates will be issued as additional information becomes available. When an alert is received, it will include instructions on how the recipient should respond.
Who receives ObieAlert messages?
ObieAlert notifications are automatically sent to the following locations:
- Student email addresses on file with the Office of the Registrar
- Student phone numbers on file with the Office of the Registrar
- Employee email addresses
- Employee phone numbers that are entered into Oberlin’s data management system (Banner)
Do I need to get ObieAlert?
ObieAlert emergency notifications are automatically sent to all oberlin.edu email addresses, all phone numbers (student and employee) provided to campus, and to all network computers and digital displays throughout campus. Members of the campus community are encouraged to also download the ObieAlert app to gain access to useful safety messaging features and other resources.
What types of events prompt ObieAlert messages?
ObieAlert makes it possible for Campus Safety to send fully customizable notifications to address any type of campus emergency, from weather advisories to power outages to lockdown notifications and more.
Who should use the ObieAlert app?
The ObieAlert app is intended for use by Oberlin students and employees who are on campus. All on-campus members of the Oberlin College and Conservatory community are encouraged to download the app.
Why should I use the ObieAlert app?
The app provides instant access to a variety of safety services, whether you’re experiencing an emergency or would like real-time monitoring and support for your late-night walk across campus. Other ObieAlert features include emergency phone numbers, counseling services (including after-hours counseling), harassment reporting, and more.
How can I add my phone number to ObieAlert?
ObieAlert sends notifications to all phones registered in Banner, Oberlin’s centralized administrative system for management of all student and employee data. Use My Self Service Profile in Oberview to follow these simple steps to ensure your phone is registered.
A classmate or colleague received an ObieAlert message, but I did not. Why would that happen?
It is possible that you have not yet downloaded the app or not all of your contact information is in our database. All members of the campus community are encouraged to add or update contact information using the My Self Service Profile in Oberview.
How can I get the ObieAlert app?
ObieAlert is available for Apple and Android devices. Download and log in using your Oberlin single sign-on (SSO) credentials.
Is the ObieAlert app just for emergencies?
ObieAlert connects you to the help you need in an emergency, but it’s also useful in non-emergency situations. Uncomfortable about a walk home alone? Want to report a tip to Campus Safety? Need guidance on academic advising? ObieAlert makes it as easy as pressing a button.
Can’t I just dial 911 in an emergency?
Yes—anyone experiencing an emergency is encouraged to dial 911. ObieAlert offers the option of dialing 911 as well as Campus Safety (440-775-8444) in case of emergency. You may also dial either number without using the app.
