Research in the Oertel Lab
Research in the Oertel lab focuses on synthesis of new compounds that are best described using extended crystal structures rather than the structures of individual molecules. We are interested in developing solution-based synthetic methods for materials that might not be stable under the very high-temperature conditions typically used to synthesize solid state materials. Some of our synthetic targets have connections to materials used in solar cells, while others are related to materials formed through corrosion of lead and its alloys. Determining the structures of these materials and understanding how they form can contribute to design of new materials, either in our laboratory or by other researchers.
