- Oberlin College is in the process of converting to a geothermal heating and cooling system and is on track to be 100% carbon neutral by 2025.
- The SIP is a laboratory and case study for research and coursework in environmental studies, geology, psychology, economics, and business.
- Oberlin college’s new system will:
- Reduce campus water use by over 5 millions gallons per year
- Reduce campus sewer discharge by over 4 million gallons per year
- Improve campus energy efficiency by more than 30%
- Oberlin College has established a very aggressive climate action plan with greenhouse gas reduction targets of 100% by 2025.
- Pipe installation and plant conversion on campus is ongoing, and this summer has seen the beginning of the Geothermal well drilling and site preparation, which will ultimately be the heart of this system.
- Achieving campus carbon neutrality will reduce 25% of the City of Oberlin’s carbon emissions.
