Folk Music Retreat

Join us for a five-day folk music retreat at the beautiful Hidden Valley campus.
Participants of all levels, instruments and voice are welcome to join. This retreat
focuses on cultivating a supportive community where musicians and enthusiasts
around the globe can gather to enjoy different styles of folk music from around the
world. Come relax, learn, be together, and share in making music together. Five-day
and single-day registration options are available.

Performing both baroque and modern repertoire, Canadian violinist Edwin Huizinga, director, has appeared alongside Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Renée Fleming, Dawn Upshaw, Mike Marshall, and Stevie Wonder, and has been featured as a soloist with the San Bernardino Symphony, Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival, and the Banff Summer Arts Festival. The 2019-20 season will bring a conducting and soloist debut with the Guelph Symphony Orchestra. Edwin is a founding member of the baroque ensemble ACRONYM which has released eight full-length albums of previously unknown and unrecorded baroque music. Edwin also performs worldwide with his folk and baroque duo Fire & Grace, and tours extensively with Tafelmusik. Edwin is part of the artistic leadership of Carmel Bach Festival, and serves as the Artistic Director for Sweetwater Music Festival and Big Sur Music Camp. An avid composer, Edwin was commissioned to write a piece for Canada's 150th anniversary. Edwin is a member of the Juno-nominated indie rock band The Wooden Sky, and is a founding member of the Classical Revolution—an organization dedicated to shaping the future of concerts and jam sessions in alternative locations around the world.
Guitarist William Coulter is a renowned performer, teacher and recording artist. He has explored the world of traditional music as both a soloist and a member of ensembles including Isle of Skye, Orison, and the Coulter-Phillips Ensemble. He began recording for Gourd Music with the release of Orison. Since then he has recorded many albums for Gourd including the best-selling Shaker music CD Simple Gifts, and the critically acclaimed Celtic Sessions. Born in New Jersey and trained on piano and classical guitar, William's discovery of Celtic music led him to a MA in Ethnomusicology and a celebrated career as a Celtic guitarist.
Fiona Gillespie is a Classically-trained and folk music-bred singer working as a freelance artist in the Celtic folk and early music worlds. She is a frequent collaborator helping to build crossover-genre shows with ensembles around the nation, the director of two ensembles (Celtic band, The Chivalrous Crickets and Scottish Baroque ensemble, Makaris), founder of nonprofit Hearthsong Folk Arts, and a songwriter, instrumentalist and folk dancer. Fiona taught at liberal arts colleges for a decade (voice, opera workshop, mainstage music and stage direction and music history), and currently teaches folk-singing workshops, camps, and private voice lessons in many styles.
John Weed is a classically-trained violinist who switched to playing Irish fiddle about 20 years ago. John lived in Ireland in 2000 and taught fiddle workshops at the Flowing Tide International Music School in Doonbeg, County Clare. He attended the Frankie Kennedy Winter School in Dunlewey, County Donegal where he has studied with Ciaran O'Maonaigh and Dermot Mcloughlin.

Hidden Valley is located near Carmel Valley Village, exactly 11.2 miles east of Hwy 1 on the Carmel Valley Road (G-16) in Carmel Valley, California. Traveling east on G-16, Hidden Valley is located on the right side just past Ford Road. The campus entrance is distinguished by a hand-carved sign denoting Hidden Valley, An Institute of the Arts. BY CAR
Traveling on Hwy 101 from the south, take the Monterey Peninsula exit in Salinas (called Sanborn Road) and follow it west (Sanborn Rd. becomes Blanco Road) to Hwy 68. Turn left onto Hwy 68 (west) and follow it about 9 miles until you see a sign for Laureles Grade (G-20) to Carmel Valley. Turn left onto G-20 and follow it until it ends (6 miles) at Carmel Valley Road (G-16). Turn left again and follow it to Hidden Valley (approx. 2 miles).
Traveling on Hwy 101 from the north, Take the Monterey Peninsula/Hwy 156 exit and follow it west about 5 miles where it will automatically put you onto Hwy 1.
Traveling on Hwy 1, simply come to the Carmel Valley Road (G-16) (just south of Carmel) and once on the Carmel Valley Road, come out 11.2 miles.

Monterey Regional Airport (12 miles from our campus) is served by Alaska, American, United Express, US Air, and Allegiant Airlines. There are rental cars available or you can take a taxi or ridesharing app.
Flights which terminate in San Jose or San Francisco airports can utilize the shuttle, Groome Transportation. Riders should take the shuttle to the Monterey Shuttle Station on Calle Principal. This downtown Monterey stop is located approx. 16 miles from Hidden Valley campus. Ridesharing apps and local taxis can be taken from the Monterey Shuttle Station to Hidden Valley. https://groometransportation.com/monterey/
BY TRAIN
The Amtrak station is in Salinas (approximately 20 miles from Carmel Valley). There is an Amtrak bus that connects the Amtrak station to Carmel. To use this service, ask for Carmel as your destination when making reservations with Amtrak. This bus cannot accept checked baggage, so be sure that you can manage your luggage on your own. The Amtrak Carmel bus stop is located at Hwy 1 & Carmel Valley Road (11.2 miles from campus). The local bus, MST 24 Line, can take you the rest of the way or you can get a taxi or ridesharing app.
Central Coast Taxi is available at all times and may be contacted at (831) 626-3333. Please note this is just one local taxi company and there are many other local taxi companies which can be easily found through a quick google search.
