This weekend, I had the pleasure of performing in my first ever Student Dance Showcase.

There's never a dull moment in the life of a Conservatory student.

Ever since I first saw OC Taiko perform at Asian Night Market last year, I’ve been an ardent supporter of taiko on campus.

As passionate musicians, almost all of us conservatory majors can say that we have experienced concerts that inspired us in unique ways. For me, the most unforgettable performances at Oberlin have been part of the Artist Recital Series.

I would not be the same anywhere else. And I’m not sure I would want to be anyone else.

I ushered in my weekend with a small, dance-related existential crisis.

After only just discovering dance, I dived right in this summer and attended ADF, one of the largest summer dance intensives in the country. What resulted was one of the most empowering, exhausting and transformative experiences of my life.

For the start of my glorious Summer of Movement™, I headed to Brooklyn, New York, couch hopped for three weeks, and took just about every single class offered at the Brooklyn Zoo Gym: Parkour, Tricking, Breakdancing, Bar Conditioning, Contortion, etc.

I wanted a program where I would be given the freedom to pursue different styles of filmmaking, because I was getting bored with knowing the ins and outs of really normal video-making, for lack of a better term.

There's something unique about being an AAPI artist that presents its own set of complexities and conflicts that made the experience of hanging out with other AAPI artists give me a sense of hope and comfort about my decision to become a filmmaker.
