Oberlin Consent Workshops and Training

College can be a big jump into the unknown. As students navigate the world independently for the first time, safety can be a big concern for many. While self-exploration is exciting, new opportunities can lead to new problems. This is why Oberlin has instituted a mandatory program of consent workshops to ensure students stay informed, respectful, and self-aware. Through these workshops, students learn our obligation within this community to take care of one another, recognize problematic behavior, develop self-empowerment, and stay prepared with a toolbox of safety and intervention methods.

These workshops are designed by students, for students. Presented by PRSM (Preventing and Responding to Sexual Misconduct), a student group working with the Title IX office, these programs are created to educate students in the most comfortable and effective ways possible. By explicitly stating prohibited conduct and painting a clear, nuanced definition of consent, no room for confusion is left. Additionally, realistic sample scenario examples help students identify these patterns in situations they could one day face.  These consent and bystander lessons are principles that students can rest assured all their peers have been taught.

Whether it’s walking home with a friend, asking someone potentially in need to borrow their phone, or just keeping an eye out, small actions lead to general safety. Even for students who feel they already understand consent and related topics, the repeated emphasis on these topics immensely comforts many.

Individual sessions are an option for students uncomfortable with a group setting, and individualized programs with content warnings are always an option. PRSM also offers other optional workshops, including workshops for parents and families, healthy relationships, shared spaces, and other interesting topics. Oberlin is committed to creating a safe, comfortable environment for all students to stay informed and secure.
