Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the environmental studies and the environmental science majors?
The two majors share the same overall vision of providing highly interdisciplinary preparation for a next generation of leaders with skills and experiences necessary to l pursue a sustainable, just and resilient future. They share a common curricular structure in which students develop individually tailored pathways and capstone experiences. Environmental studies places greater emphasis on developing depth in the social sciences or humanities. Environmental science builds greater depth in the natural sciences.
When can I declare this major?
Students will be able to declare the environmental science major starting in the fall of 2025.
Can I double-major in environmental science with other majors?
- Students seeking a highly interdisciplinary experience may find that a combination of courses from within the ESS program and other departments offers a complete pathway without the need for a second major.
- Students seeking additional depth in natural science may choose to double major in biology, chemistry, physics, geosciences, data science, etc.
- Some students may choose to combine environmental science with a social science or humanities major to broaden the scope of their academic portfolio.
Can a double degree student in the college and the conservatory pursue the environmental science major?
Yes. Double degree students can major in environmental science in the college of arts and sciences in addition to their conservatory degree.
Can 3-2 engineering students pursue an environmental science major?
Yes. With careful planning early on, it is possible for a student to complete the environmental science major at Oberlin and still be able to complete their 3-2 engineering program.
Can I double-major in environmental studies and environmental science?
No. Students are not permitted to double-major in environmental studies and environmental science.
Can current environmental studies and/or undeclared students declare the environmental science major?
Students will be able to declare the environmental science major starting in the fall of 2025.
