Q&A

What elements of your personal and professional life would be helpful to you in your service as a trustee?

My years as a student at Oberlin played a huge role in shaping who I am today, both personally and professionally. I benefited immensely from the academic rigor - it was at Oberlin where I learned to think deeply and analytically, to be a precise yet expressive writer, and to be challenged intellectually by brilliant professors and fellow students. I was and continue to be moved by the college’s history and social justice mission, which helped inspire my career as a political journalist. The friends I made at Oberlin remain some of the most important and influential people in my life, and I’m grateful for these lifelong bonds. Serving as a member of the Oberlin Board of Trustees would be an honor and a meaningful way to give back to a place that had such a lasting impact on my life.

What draws you to this service?

I’ve spent my career as a storyteller, first as a journalist and now as a communications consultant. I want to use the skills I’ve developed professionally over many years to help Oberlin tell its full story: A world-class liberal arts college and conservatory with extraordinary resources and outstanding students whose Oberlin education and values are sorely needed in our changing, tumultuous times. I want to help ensure the college is on its front foot in presenting itself publicly, or the caricature of Oberlin put forth by conservative media and in some popular culture may threaten to demean and degrade its reputation. I look forward to working with stakeholders - the administration, faculty, students and other alumni – to present a well-rounded portrayal of Oberlin to the world.

What else do you want your fellow alumni to know about you?

I’ll continue to be an avid booster of Oberlin no matter the results of this election. It’s a place that continues to shape me, and of which I’m so proud to be an alum.
