Resources for Incoming Students
These are helpful advising and registration resources for new students.
Important: Internet searches to find information do not always present the most current results. We strongly recommend using the resources listed below.
Catalog
The catalog contains information about degree requirements; major, minor, and integrative concentration requirements, and course descriptions and special notes. Use the catalog as a way to see the many courses offered at Oberlin. Not all courses listed in the catalog are offered every semester. Check the schedule of classes to see if a course is offered in the upcoming semester.
Courses Appropriate for New Students
Courses on this list are carefully chosen by academic departments. Each course has seats open for first-year students, does not have prerequisites, and is especially suited for entering first years.
Schedule of Classes
The schedule of classes lists days and times for course sections. The class schedule details the offerings in both current and past semesters. Note that not all courses are intended for first-year students. Some courses have prerequisites. Other courses require instructor permission; in such instances, students must consult with the instructor before registration.
Degree Works
Degree Works is a comprehensive, web-based, academic advising and degree audit tool that helps students and their advisors successfully navigate curriculum requirements. Students can check degree progress, utilize the “What-if” feature to explore the requirements of future majors, minors, and concentrations, as well as access the list of courses earned each semester, including applied AP, transfer, and IB credit.
Credit for AP/IB Exams
Review the AP/IB Scores & Credit chart for details on the examinations and scores accepted for credit.
Pre-Medicine and Health Careers
Students interested in exploring pre-medicine and health careers in either direct patient care fields (i.e. doctor, nurse, etc.) and/or public/global health are invited to explore information on Pre-Medicine and Health Careers and the Pre-Medicine and Health Quick Start Guide. Many pre-medicine/health pathways have required courses that are best spread over multiple years, which may inform your first-semester course selection.
