10 Violinists Advance to the 2019 Cooper Competition’s Concerto Round

Each will perform July 23 in Warner Concert Hall, with hopes of advancing to the July 24 Recital Round.

Following three days of Semifinal Round competition, the 2019 Cooper Competition field has been reduced from 24 violinists to 10. The following participants will advance to perform in the Concerto Round on Tuesday, July 23:

SESSION I

The Concerto Finals will take place in two sessions, at 1:30 and 7 p.m., in Warner Concert Hall on the campus of Oberlin Conservatory. At the conclusion of the second session, the jury will select six violinists to advance to the competition's Recital Round at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 24.

Upon completion of the Recital Round, jurors will select three violinists to perform in the Concerto Finals with The Cleveland Orchestra on Friday, July 26, at Cleveland’s Severance Hall. At stake is a grand prize of $20,000, in addition to second and third prizes of $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.

Tuesday’s Concerto Round and Wednesday’s Recital Round at Oberlin are free and open to the public. Tickets for Friday’s Concerto Finals at Severance Hall range from $13 to $30, and one student under 18 earns free admission with the purchase of each adult ticket. Please note: Friday’s Concerto Finals will be conducted by Gemma New, making her debut appearance with The Cleveland Orchestra. New replaces Bramwell Tovey, who has canceled his appearance due to illness.

All rounds at Oberlin are live-streamed on oberlin.edu/cooper. The Recital Round at Oberlin and Concerto Finals at Severance Hall will be broadcast on WCLV FM 104.9, Cleveland’s classical music station. The Recital Round will be broadcast on delay on Thursday evening, July 25. Host John Simna will be on hand to broadcast the Concerto Finals live from Severance Hall on Friday, July 26.

Oberlin Conservatory is proud to announce the return of the Richard Miller Classical Voice Competition for High School Students, a festival aimed at encouraging and supporting high school students in the pursuit of a career in classical vocal music. The festival is named in honor of Richard Miller, a member of the voice faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music for more than 40 years.
