Oberlin Sinfonietta focuses on a wide range of compositions by composers from the last 100 years. This concert is conducted by Timothy Weiss and features violinist Hannah Hurwitz and Professor of Voice Timothy LeFebvre.

Programmed in connection with the total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, this concert features works inspired by historical understandings of the eclipse and the concept of light itself.

Throughout her work, Kaiija Saariaho was deeply connected to light. Much of her work focuses on the intersection of music and light, and she strove to reflect light through timbre.

Bernard Rands’ song cycle Canti dell’Eclisse (Songs of the Eclipse) is drawn from twelve poems from various time periods and cultures that all examine the eclipse.

Program:

Kaija Saariaho Graal théâtre (1994)

  Hannah Hurwitz, violin

Intermission

Bernard Rands Canti dell’Eclisse (1992)

  Timothy LeFebvre, baritone
