In an increasingly multipolar world, powerful nations are increasing defense budgets, triggering an endless spiral of global arms races. With rapid technological advances, many states are outspending one another in investing in R&D on military technologies, adding to uncertainty and insecurity. In the meantime, the postwar rules-based international order is eroding as major powers put national interests first, turning away from international cooperation, particularly on disarmament. In an age of growing uncertainty, what can the UN do to maintain peace and security? And what does disarmament promise?

Speaker: Mr. Tsutomu Kono, recently retired senior political affairs officer from the Office for Disarmament Affairs at the United Nations in New York and Geneva. He continues to work as a Fellow of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) after his 25-year service at the UN Secretariat.
