This concert honors Joseph Schwartz's years of service to Oberlin College & Conservatory and is made possible by the generosity of the Schwartz Family and Oberlin alumni and friends. In 1958, he was the winner of the prestigious Walter W. Naumburg Competition. Much sought after as a performer, he was also a beloved teacher and colleague at Oberlin from 1960-1998. During that time, he served for many years as chair of the piano department, founded Oberlin's Summer Piano Institute in 1983, co-founded The Oberlin Trio in 1984 along with Andor Toth, former professor of violoncello and chamber music, and Stephen Clapp, former Oberlin professor of violin and Dean Emeritus of the Juilliard School. In 1987, he was awarded the Robert W. Wheeler Professorship at Oberlin, a five-year appointment which recognizes excellence at the height of a performer's career.

In remembrance of Professor Schwartz, performances and comments will be made by the following Oberlin alumni, faculty and family members. Performances will be played on the Hamburg piano given in honor of his teaching career by Motoko T. & Gordon L. Deane '71/'71.
