A Note of Care and Encouragement to Our Families Affected by the California Wildfires
January 14, 2025 9:15 AM
Dear Obies,
As we witness the devastating impact of the wildfires sweeping through California, we are reaching out with heartfelt care and support. The images and stories remind us of the profound loss experienced by thousands of residents, and we recognize that many within our community may be directly or indirectly affected. Whether you are in California, Oberlin, or elsewhere, please know that your Oberlin family stands with you during this challenging time.
Our immediate outreach has included students residing in the affected areas. However, we understand that the impact extends further. If you or your loved ones are affected in any way, we encourage you to use our Campus Support Services.
For those who wish to assist, we have compiled a list of organizations working on the front lines to support wildfire-relief efforts:
Mutual Aid LA Network (MALAN): This network provides critical resources across Los Angeles, including shelters, animal centers, PPE, and food. Their public Google spreadsheet is updated frequently, and donations support resource distribution on the ground.
GoFundMe Wildfire Relief Hub: This centralized hub connects you to fundraisers assisting individuals and nonprofits impacted by the wildfires. Donations go directly to those in need.
California Fire Foundation: This organization supports firefighters and their families with financial and emotional assistance. Your contributions bolster their vital work.
World Central Kitchen: Active in the region, this organization collaborates with local restaurants to deliver meals to emergency responders and affected residents. Donations enable this critical food aid.
211 LA and Airbnb Partnership: This initiative offers free, temporary housing for displaced individuals. If you can host, Airbnb provides service fee waivers and damage protection insurance. Donations also support these emergency housing efforts.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this disaster. We will continue to monitor events and explore ways to assist those in need. Again, please do not hesitate to reach out for assistance and support if needed.
In solidarity,
Karen C. Goff
