Abby Tejara Rocha
Abby (she/her) is a senior international student from Uruguay double majoring in Physics (Astrophysics concentration) and Computer Science. She is a student representative of the Physics and Astronomy department and a member of the Computer Science Majors Committee.
Abby conducts research on metallicities in different galaxies in Professor Scudder’s laboratory in the Physics and Astronomy Department. She also does research at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) under the mentorship of Dr. Gabriela González, and is also continuing her research at MIT under the mentorship of Dr. Anna-Christina Eilers in astronomy.
She is a co-founder of Bridging Resources and Access to Nurture Community Through Holistic Engagement in STEM (BRANCHES), an Oberlin College committee that fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM.
Abby has worked at the Admissions Office since her first year at Oberlin College, as an ambassador, tour guide, interviewer, summer intern, Campus Visit Assistant, and now as a Senior Fellow. Outside of Admissions, she is a Peer Advising Leader (PAL) Coordinator as well as a Center for Learning, Education, and Research in the Sciences (CLEAR) Coordinator.
Abby enjoys participating in community service initiatives such as the Bonner Scholars Program, as she considers that if we contribute to our community we can all achieve a more equitable society.
