Okay right off the bat, I realize the title of this blog is setting me up to make some big claims... but I am prepared to at least try to convince you. At this point, I’ve practically written dozens of blogs about why Oberlin is a perfect fit for me personally. But what about you, dear prospie?
Before I answer that question, I want to give you some context. I’ve just returned to campus from spring break, where I spent quite a lot of time thinking about convincing my younger sister (who is a high school senior) to come here. I won’t go into all the details of her college search process, but I will say that Oberlin is at least a contender for her. When she told one of her coaches the list of schools she was choosing between, their reply was “Oh, going to Oberlin would change your life.”
And I absolutely agree. Three and a half semesters in, I can undoubtedly say that being an Obie has changed my life for the better—physically, socially, emotionally, academically, and professionally! I’ve become more compassionate. I’ve learned how to advocate for myself. I’ve found new passions that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I’ve grown into a better friend and community member. I’ve gained a level of fulfillment in my education that I didn’t believe to be possible. I’ve deepened my critical thinking skills. I feel more comfortable navigating situations that are overwhelming. I could go on! And it’s not just me. I’ve seen these changes unfold in everyone I know here (as well as in alums who I’ve met in other miscellaneous parts of my life).
Recently, I was talking to one of my fellow older-sibling Obies about this, and we both agreed that it’s sort of impossible to fully describe the ways in which Oberlin is a life-changing place to be a student. And I know they say that about a lot of schools, but Oberlin’s not like other schools... after all, there is only one Oberlin, as the slogan goes. But seriously, Obies become a different kind of awesome in their four (or sometimes five) years here.
So for you, dear prospie, whoever you may be, I want you to know that Oberlin will change your life too. If you are even remotely considering Oberlin, give us a real chance. Fully consider what it would be like to be an Obie, and how that opportunity would shape the rest of your life. And definitely come to an accepted students day if you can! No matter who you are or what you hope to achieve, Oberlin will help you parse out how to get there. It will bring you closer to your passions, and help you meet people who will stay with you for the rest of your life. And yes, I know I’m getting paid to say this. But I still believe it all to be true. I don’t think Oberlin is perfect by any means—there is a lot our administration needs to work on—but I am still grateful every day for the experience Oberlin has given me.
Ultimately, there’s a reason we’re always talking about one person being able to change the world. When that one person is an Obie, anything is possible! But in order for you to change the world, you need to let Oberlin change you first. We’re ready and waiting to change your life. You just have to say yes.
