Lock-In Spots Fit for an Obie

In light of finals coming to a close, I did some reflecting upon what (other than my powerhouse of a brain) got me to the finish line. When it comes to Oberlin courses, we are lucky in that our professors and assignments are catered to the genuine interest to students; while this makes forming final paper theses more enjoyable, there does tend to be some inevitable drudgery that comes with exam memorization, extensive revisions, and long days spent devoted to finals. While my favorite outdoor study spots are left vacant and snowy, I’ve come to find an appreciation for cozy indoor study spots, a warm beverage (for stamina), and cherishing the scenic snow from a distance.

Slow Train Cafe

For the extroverts of Oberlin, Slow Train provides a tranquil (dare I say a “modern farmhouse energy”), lively study spot where at least one friend is bound to be found. With a plethora of eating and seating options ranging from sandwiches and scones to tables and couches, everyone can find their personal optimal study spot. Heavily armed with outlets, friends, and snacks, Slow Train has everything an Obie could need to sustain themselves through a long day of studying.

Egg Chairs

For the introverts of Oberlin, there is more than one fantastic spot. A must-mention, the architectural masterpieces of Mudd egg chairs are the perfect secluded study spots which every Obie finds comfort in. Conveniently situated along the windows of Mudd, these chairs are equipped not only with natural light, but with outlets too. The perfect size for staying cozy without feeling claustrophobic, when I curl up in an egg chair, I never want to get out-- a feeling perfect for finals season.

Rented Rooms in Mudd

In addition to the distraction-abolishing qualities of Mudd private rooms, I like these because they hold me accountable as I commit specific time to studying. Whether I have a group project for which my team needs a first-floor meeting room, or I simply want to lock myself in a third-floor cubicle, peace, quiet, and focus are attainable. While there are many cozy lock-in spots within the floors of Mudd library, I appreciate the intentionality of renting a room. Not only do I get work done, but I find this helps me turn an everyday lock-in session to an important appointment.

Stevenson Dining Hall

This one, while possibly up for debate, is a favorite of mine. An experience which many of my friends relate to, and maybe it’s the course-style eating habits we’ve formed, is the absurd amount of time I always seem to spend in Stevie. With food and familiar faces, I’ve found that bringing my laptop to Stevie is a fantastic way to get work done without feeling immense amounts of pressure that admittedly can come with a library lock-in day. Especially at a quieter time after the noon lunch rush, the big windows, plentiful natural light, and positive reinforcement of food help me get work done. Some may call it a stretch, but I call it perfect.
