Areas of Study

Education

  • BA, College of Wooster, 2017
  • PhD, Carnegie Mellon University, 2022

Professor Bowers’ teaching interests are environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, and general chemistry.

Research in the Bowers lab focuses on the chemical fates of contaminants in aqueous systems. By simulating environmental conditions in the laboratory and utilizing mass spectrometry to characterize contaminants and their transformation products, we can understand the impacts of contaminants on the environment, improve remediation strategies, and inform product formulations to be more sustainable. We particularly focus on photochemical transformations of contaminants, as these occur naturally in surface water and are often leveraged as a water treatment tactic in built systems.
