Theater

Why take courses in Theater?

We pride ourselves on a rigorous and supportive theater culture that encourages experimentation, collaboration and the creation of new connections across fields. We embody stories that reflect, reconsider and respond to the world around us. Our work requires cultivating imagination, collaboration, perseverance and a community of artisans working together to realize living moments.

What kinds of questions does Theater explore?
  • What techniques can be used to bring a story to life through different mediums?

  • How does a show move from concept to full stage production?
  • What are the historical trends that influence the visual interpretations of modern theater?

What advice would you give students interested in taking courses in Theater?

Begin with THEA 100, THEA 197 or THEA 252. They are all introductory courses designed to acclimate new students to the department

There are many ways to be involved in theater, whether it is through acting, directing, playwriting and production, or through innumerable opportunities in our production shops and theaters.

Taking Courses

Courses for non-majors or general interest

  • THEA 252 Foundations Of Theater is appropriate for new students. THEA 197 is a half course which provides the opportunity to serve on one technical/administrative crew for one of the theater or dance productions during the semester: scenery, lighting, sound, or costumes. Many students prefer to take THEA 100 Introduction To Acting in their first semester.

Getting started in the major

Prospective majors must have completed  THEA 197 Production Crew,  in order to declare the theater major.

    Advanced Placement Credit

Theater does not transfer AP credit toward the major requirements. Refer to the AP/IB chart for complete information about AP test scores.
