English

Why take courses in English?

Our students gain an enhanced attention to aesthetic detail, a keen critical mindset, and a sophisticated approach to reading, writing, and cultural discourse.

What kinds of questions does English explore?
  • How have novels shaped the way we fall in love?

  • What are the social uses of humor?
  • How are literary (and more broadly, artistic) texts shaped by their cultures, languages, and social and political realities?
  • Does language reflect reality, or invent it?

What advice would you give students interested in taking courses in English?

In our classes students learn how to interpret traditional literary genres such as poems, plays, and novels, but also to decode films, magazines, websites and other cultural objects–there’s a class for every student.
