The Oberlin College softball team was within reach of its first North Coast Athletic Conference win in the second game of a doubleheader against the College of Wooster on Wednesday. The Yeowomen rallied in the ninth to cut Wooster’s lead 2-1 with an RBI hit by junior Ashley Gorham, but it was too little too late for Oberlin.

Sophomore Sophie Simon-Ortiz pitched a solid game, going six innings while giving up only nine hits and two runs. Oberlin had come off a tough 0-6 loss in the first game of the afternoon. Wooster’s strong pitching combined with Oberlin’s off night offensively contributed to the loss.

It has been a frustrating week for the Yeowomen. Last Sunday, they could have used some sunlight on an otherwise windy day in their match-ups against the Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan on April 15. With hard fought battles in both games, the Yeowomen lost 10-2 and 9-6.

First-year Lauren Luther led Oberlin on the offensive end, going 3-6 with three RBIs, a double, and a stolen base. Luther’s classmate, first-year Julia Chauvin, also had a stellar day going 3-5 with 3 RBIs, a double, two runs scored and a stolen base. Chauvin leads the squad in home runs with two, and RBIs with 11.

First-year Emily Bradley led the Bishops that day with a home run, a double, four runs batted in and four runs scored. In the opener, the Bishops were first to get on the board with a stolen base to home plate by first-year Amanda Sanders off an Oberlin error. Two more runs amassed would put the Bishops ahead of the Yeomen, 3-0.

Oberlin responded with a two-run single by Chauvin to put the Yeowomen on the board, ending the first inning with a score of 3-2. Ohio Wesleyan quickly responded scoring seven more runs in the contest and defeating Oberlin in the opener 10-2.

In the second match-up, with the score tied 1-1, Ohio Wesleyan blasted a three run homer, putting the Bishops ahead 4-1. Oberlin would not be fazed, however, as the team let its bats do the talking. The Yeowomen responded with five straight runs. Luther got the rally started with a two run single, giving Oberlin a 6-4 lead.

But the Obies could not hold the lead. Ohio Wesleyan scored runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings, earning them a second victory on the day 9-6.
