Men's Tennis Breezes Past Ohio Dominican
Yeomen tennis gained another win this past Saturday in their non-conference match against Ohio Dominican. At first, victory was not so certain. Things got off to a shaky start for the Yeomen after junior Colin Burling and classmate Chris Pray suffered a surprising 6-8 loss as the number one doubles pair. The second doubles team fortunately saved the Yeomen’s blushes as sophomore David Midler and junior Ezra Goldman won 8-3 while senior Arthur Zeyda and junior Thomas Page won the third doubles 8-3. Pray started off at first singles as usual and played by far the most tedious match out of all six singles pairings. His biggest problem was that his opponent was merely pushing the ball over the net and waiting for Pray to make a mistake. He had a hard time adjusting to this style of play and it cost him the first set 4-6. He came in with more confidence in the second: a little serve and volley tactic alongside attacking the net won him the second set 6-4. With three singles matches ending in wins, Oberlin had already clinched the team victory, leaving Pray locked in a battle of the nerves in the resulting super breaker. He ultimately pulled through for the win of 10-7. Midler made quick work of his opponent playing at number two singles. He stayed on top throughout the match without any dropped shots and gained a dominating breadstick and bagel win of 6-1, 6-0. In three matches, Midler has only lost a single game. Zeyda came in strong as the number three. Powerful serves and smart play kept him on top, and he eventually won the match 6-3, 6-0. Goldman came in at the four and was engaged in a battle of the serves in the first seven games of the first set. With no ground-strokes being hit, the match dragged on as Goldman tried to outwit his opponent. He finally managed to break his opponent’s serve to gain the lead of 5-4 and serve for the set, winning 6-4. The second set was less of a struggle as Goldman gained the breadstick win of 6-1. Burling and Page wrapped up the match as Burling played a fairly even match at the five spot. Though he seemed to have trouble every now and again, he came through to win in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Page dominated in the final match as the six and picked up two bagels to end out the match. Final score: 8-1 Oberlin. The Yeomen came out swinging in this match for a dominating win against Ohio Dominican University, advancing their record to 6-1 and 2-0 in the conference. The men will be hitting the road today to play Baldwin-Wallace at 6 p.m. | ![]() |
