The Oberlin football team has plenty to be excited about as it prepares for the opening home game this Saturday at Dill Field against Heidelberg. Despite the Yeomen’s disappointing loss to Case Western on September 2, they showed that they are a squad full of grit and potential.   

The football season started out with a bang as Oberlin bounced to an early 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, thanks to a reception by junior Chris Schubert and a 22-yard field goal by senior kicker Mike Tomlinson. Both players, along with junior Chris Pisani, received pre-season All-American honorable mention honors.

By halftime, two field goals by Case Western reduced Oberlin’s lead to four. At the pivotal moment when Case thought they could make a comeback, Oberlin started the third quarter with a little spark of their own. Sophomore running back R.V. Carroll scored an 86-yard run. Case managed to score a touchdown to which Schubert responded with another run for Oberlin. But just when the Yeomen had gained a little breathing room with their lead of  23-12, Case was able to tie the game up with 11 points in the final seven minutes.

In overtime, Oberlin could not convert their possession. Case won the game on a one-yard run. Although Oberlin lost 29-23, it had an advantage in running the ball and possession time. Carroll ran for a total of 161 yards.
