Asian/Pacific American Community Coordinator

Domenico Ruggerio
I am the current Asian/Pacific American Community Coordinator at the MRC and am excited to return as part of the team for 2009-10. I am a proud Hapa (Filipino & Sicilian) and was raised in the Philippines and Long Island. I graduated from Colgate University in May 2008 with a Pre-medicine focus and concentration in Sociology and Anthropology. My senior thesis was a quantitative study examining how human sexuality and sexual health topics are taught in the U.S. medical education curriculum, and I had the privilege to present his research at the Eastern Sociological Society Conference.

I am particularly interested in the intersectionality of identities and examining the nuance and complexity of racial/ethnic communities. Throughout my time at Colgate, I had a wide range of experiences working with multiple communities around issues of race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, class, and faith. I served as an intern for the ALANA (African, Latin, Asian, and Native American) Cultural Center, the Women’s Studies Center, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning) Initiatives. As a student activist I was highly involved and held leadership positions in organizations such as the Asian American Coalition, Filipino Student Association, South Asian Cultural Club, Latin American Student Organization, and Rainbow Alliance. I co-founded the group Beyond Check One – the first cultural organization to highlight issues concerning multi-racial/ethnic and transracially adopted students. I also served as editor-in-chief of the PRISM Magazine, a campus arts magazine dedicated to the voices and stories of students of color.

Some of my many responsibilities during my first year at Oberlin include: working closely with students, faculty, and staff around a wide-range of academic and cultural programs including Asian American Heritage Month and the MRC My Name is My Own Series, advising and mentoring individual and groups of students, and taking MRC publications like the weekly events email and pamphlets and posters for programs like the Race and Resistance and the Geographies of Displacement Symposia to a much higher level.
