HOW TO HELP A FRIEND...

• For anyone, reporting a rape is a tremendous ordeal.

• Do not question the person’s character or motives - people rarely lie about assaults.

• Be supportive and nonjudgmental at all times.

• Do not ask why it happened.

• Do not assume that not talking about it will make it go away.

• Regardless of intent of prosecution, medical care is strongly suggested.

• Inform victim/survivor about the rape-kit exam and time limits for the needs of legal prosecution.

• Inform victim/survivor about the resources available, but allow them to make the choice.

• Do not pressure a friend into any decisions.

Recovery is a process, not an event.
