Kate Thomson-Jones

I am an Assistant Professor in the philosophy department at Oberlin College. Before coming to Oberlin in 2003, I completed my Ph.D. at the University of Toronto and held a one-year position as a Teaching Fellow in Moral Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews.

My research interests center on various questions in the philosophy of film, particularly regarding our engagement with films, as well as aesthetic formalism and the value of art. I’ve recently become interested in digital cinema and more generally in the digital as an artistically significant category. As a result, I am working on a book on the philosophy of digital art. I’ve published articles on ethical art criticism, formalism, narration, and empathy in film. I’m the author of Aesthetics and Film (2008) and co-editor of New Waves in Aesthetics (2008).

See me on Philosophy TV!

I teach philosophy of art, philosophy of film, philosophy of music, philosophy of digital art, emotion theory, ethics, and value theory.
