The Client Services group provides assistance to all Oberlin College clients (faculty, staff, and students) with respect to computer/information technology services. This includes the following functions:

  • Operates the CIT Help Desk, located in Mudd 005 (x58197). The Help Desk provides walk-in and call-in service, mainly to faculty and staff, but also to students who have been directed there by the Technology Services Center, located in the Academic Commons for increased assistance. Assistance for faculty and staff is limited to college-owned computers. The Help Desk maintains a supply of laptops, both Mac and Windows, for check-out by staff and faculty who may be traveling for a short period (1 day - 2 weeks).
  • Operates the Technology Services Center (TSC). This is a facility located in room Mudd 112B of the Academic Commons where students can get assistance for all manner of computer problems, from network access in residence halls to use of multimedia equipment in the Commons.
  • Reviews, tracks, and responds to all e-mail sent to cit@oberlin.edu and voice-mail on the main help line at x58197.
  • Creates work orders as needed and tracks them to their completion.
  • Maintains the CIT web pages and the CIT Wiki.
  • Makes software available for download from CIT web site, in accordance with licensing guidelines.
  • Maintains the public, and some departmental, computer labs. Installs software during the summer months in accordance with plan established late spring, based on requests from faculty. Labs are monitored daily by Remote Site Monitors, who check for non-functioning computer equipment, and maintain supplies (paper, ink cartridges, etc.).
  • Provides support to students connected to the residential network (Resnet).
  • Conducts installation and deliveries of Macintosh and Windows computers to faculty and staff.
  • Conducts some one-on-one training. Maintains online documentation (Wiki and web) and provides some online tutorials.
  • Assists people with computer accounts, providing information on how to get an account, how to changes a password, etc.

The Client Services group consists of nine regular staff, augmented by approximately 30 student staff members during the academic year. The student staff function as: Technology Consultants and Remote Site Monitors. The value of our student staff members cannot be overstated!
