LATEST NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Many Projects Scheduled for Winter Term [23Dec09]

CIT has several projects scheduled for Winter Term, January 2010. Projects include the upgrade of the Bio and Chem labs in the Science Center, network upgrades in the Science Center and Peters Hall, implementation of the new network authentication process - SafeConnect (see details below, and an upgrade of Blackboard. See the complete list of projects by clicking here.

Implementation of New Network Authentication Process [17Dec09]

Schedule for the Safe*Connect Network Authentication Process:

Wired connections in the Residence Hall part of the Campus Network Monday, October 19, 2009 (during Fall break)
All campus Wireless Wednesday, October 21, 2009 (during Fall break)
All other wired connections (academic buildings and administrative offices) Tuesday, January 5, 2010 (during Winter Term)

SafeConnectLoginThe new network authentication process, known as SafeConnect, will be required for all College network users (faculty, staff, students, guests) on Tuesday, 05 January 2010, per the previously defined schedule (see above). SafeConnect is being implemented, as noted in previous CIT email messages and open forums, to enhance the safety and security of the campus network.

Beginning 05 January 2010, everyone accessing the College network from on-campus, using desktop and/or laptop computers, Mac/Windows/Linux operating systems, mobile devices/PDAs (Blackberries, iPodTouches, iPhones, etc.), on both wired or wireless connections, will be required to authenticate using the SafeConnect process. For most, this will involve opening a web browser, accepting the policy key, and entering your ObieID credentials. Users of Linux computers and other devices (PDAs) will not have a policy key to download at this time, but will still be required to authenticate. Users who use VPN (Virtual Private Network) from oncampus (such as wireless users), and currently have it installed, will not be required to use SafeConnect at this time. (Oncampus VPN users will be required to use SafeConnect at a later date.) Users who want to use VPN, but do not have it installed on 05 January, will need to use SafeConnect to authenticate in order to download the VPN client from oncampus. Users accessing the campus network from offsite (home, etc.) via VPN will not be required to use SafeConnect.

Complete details on the process can be found on the CIT Wiki. Prior to 05 January, it would be extremely beneficial for you to ensure you have the latest version of an appropriate anti-virus program running on your computer. Sophos (Macs) and MS Security Essentials (recommended for Windows) and/or McAfee (Windows) are available for ObieID account holders for download from the CIT Standard Software web pages). You should also ensure you have applied the latest operating system updates and patches, especially if using a Windows computer (this should be done automatically on most college-owned computers).

This new system will not work for Mac OSX 10.3.9. Anyone using this version of the MAC operating system must contact the CIT Help Desk directly to get authenticated (x58197). Mac OSX 10.3.9 users are encouraged to upgrade, as this version will only be supported through the end of the current academic year - June 2010. (Note: the latest version of the Mac operating system - v. 10.6 - will not run on older PowerPC Macs.)

Once authenticated, users who have the policy key installed will generally be required to reauthenticate only once per semester. Users of devices for which there is no policy key will need to reauthenticate more frequently if the device has been inactive on the campus network for more than four days.

Anyone experiencing difficulties authenticating, or using a device or system that does not authenticate and cannot connect to a web browser, should contact the CIT Help Desk for assistance (x58197, cit@oberlin.edu).

The Safe*Connect system will provide only informational warnings until next academic year (unless a virus outbreak or other circumstance warrants changes to these settings). CIT’s main focus is simply to provide a product that will keep the network as safe and secure as possible, and assist our user community as much as possible. Please read the full story for more details.SafeConnectInfo

Network Bandwidth Increased! [Updt:17Dec09]

Our total network bandwidth increased on 05 October 2009! Our connection speed was doubled, from 90 megabits per second (Mbps) to approximately 180 Mbps (200 Mbps minus required operational overhead). The agreement provides a fiber link, allowing for a future growth capability of up to 10 times what we have now (up to one gigabit per second). This scalable growth potential uses a tiered bandwidth subscription model, i.e., it is dependent upon our expressed need and available funding. This should serve Oberlin’s needs for the next few years.

Oberlin College CIT Does Not Phish! [Updt:17Dec09]

Oberlin College CIT will never, ever, ask you for your password or e-mail credentials in an email. If you think messages that do are "phishy", you are right to be suspicious, and we thank you for not replying to the message. Unfortunately, there is little we can do in advance to block attempts like this, so please, remain vigilant! Please read from the following links for more information:

http://citwiki.oberlin.edu/index.php/Phishing and http://www.oberlin.edu/cit/news/alerts.html

When using the web version of OCMail, be sure to check the box next to the message and click the "Report Spam" button to inform Google of the "phishy" message.
