A blisteringly funny romp around the world in two hours, Candide follows four sheltered young people taught that “all is for the best” as they venture out into the world. Bernstein’s irresistible setting of Voltaire’s political satire ranges from darkly comic musical theater (Auto-da-Fé) to virtuosic coloratura arias (Glitter and Be Gay) to orchestral gems, such as the beloved overture. Having endured endless disasters on their travels around the globe, the pupils return home to piece together a new philosophy—a hopeful compromise somewhere between the blind faith and bleak pessimism they’ve encountered on their journey.

Sung in English.

“Once one dismisses the rest of all possible worlds, one finds that this is the best of all possible worlds!”
