The divide between Jose Antonio Vargas’ personal and professional lives has been even more defined than most. A successful journalist who’d written for the New Yorker, Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, and other outlets, Vargas was also part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings. But unknown to even his closest friends, Vargas was hiding a secret: Since age 16 he’d been living the life of an undocumented immigrant. Today he runs Define American, a nonprofit seeking to expand and elevate our national conversation on immigration.
“This deceit never got easier. The more I did it, the more I felt like an impostor, the more guilt I carried—and the more I worried that I would get caught.”
The Office of the President and the Finney Lecture Committee are sponsors of this Convocation.
