For more than two decades, the South African singing group Ladysmith Black Mambazo has captivated audiences around the world with its rich a capella harmonies and energetic live performances. First brought to worldwide attention on Paul Simon’s album Graceland, Mambazo has gone on to a prolific recordingcareer of its own, selling more than seven million copies of more than 40 albums, including three Grammy award winners. Throughout their careers, the members of Mambazo have been powerful advocates for civil rights in their home country. Nelson Mandela invited them to accompany him to Oslo to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and to perform at his inauguration in South Africa. Their free performance at Oberlin is part of the college’s celebration of Black History Month.
“… the spiritual and musical energy was palpable among the sold-out crowd.”
