Paul Beatty is a New York-based novelist who began his writing career as a poet. He won the first-ever Grand Poetry Slam Champion of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. One of the prizes for winning the championship title was the book deal that resulted in his first volume of poetry, Big Bank Take Little Bank (1991). His first novel, The White Boy Shuffle, was published to widespread praise in 1996.

His latest book, The Sellout, a satire of U.S racial politics, received the National Book Critics Circle Award and the 2015 Man Booker Prize; the latter made him the first American writer to win the award. The Man Booker Prize is the leading literary award in the English-speaking world. Beatty received an MFA in creative writing from Brooklyn College, and an MA in psychology from Boston University.
